As a nurse, care is required when marketing your self-employed business to advertise your services appropriately.  As a reserved title, nurses should utilize the identifying extension that describes their specific qualifications and most accurately describes the role. It is acceptable for nurses to reference academic credentials as well as the reserved title.  However, based on your regulatory obligations, it is strictly forbidden to imply or infer that those academic credentials or any other qualifications or memberships are qualifications to practice nursing if you are not registered to practice nursing.  It is your responsibility to ensure that any additional titles or extensions do not confuse the nursing qualification and role(s).

When working as a self-employed nurse, it is particularly important to ensure that you do not use a different reserved title to your qualification, even if it better suits the primary role you undertake or the current role.

As regulated professionals, nurses need to use their titles in a way that does not damage the integrity of the profession or mislead clients in any way. Make sure you follow the standards of practice on the use of the title set by your regulatory body at all times.

Each registrant is accountable for the practice they provide to the public.  Registrants have a duty to provide safe and ethical care and to use their professional judgement.  This duty is potentially even more critical for those who are working in a self-employed capacity.  While it may be necessary to work within the scope and guidelines of the location when subcontracting, the self-employed nurse needs to follow their professional standards at all times.

At CompanyOn, we’re committed to supporting our audience, no matter if they are just thinking of pursuing professional independence, or they are already well-established solo practitioners.
